The Cool Ways to Get to School:
Take the bus, bike or walk
|

New program in Oakland and Berkeley California
helps "punch" out pollution.
What do gremlins have to do with reducing the amount of greenhouse gases we produce? A whole lot, if you're one of the hundreds of students participating in the Pollution Punchcard Contest. The contest, sponsored by TALC's Safe Routes to Schools program, encourages schoolchildren to eliminate car trips by walking, biking, or taking the bus to school. The pilot program debuted in the spring of 2008 at three schools with funding from the
Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
During the six-week content, students have their cards punched on unannounced days if they got to school without an auto trip. This gives them chances to win prizes, while all participants gain an awareness of how their individual actions impact climate change. Many thanks to contest organizer Jennifer Su, who has worked tirelessly to ensure that it runs smoothly. For more information contact Susan Silber at 510-740-3150 x332.

Do you have a science fair project on global warming, climate change and/or solutions? Do you know of a student who does? Send us your weblink.
If you don't have a webpage, you can send us information about your project. We'd be glad to receive descriptions and photos of your project. In order for us to run a photo of you, we will need a photo release, which we can arrange if you are selected for the GlobalWarming Kids.Net website. |
